ChatGPT Now Recommends Local Businesses Using Yelp. Here Is How to Show Up

The Yelp agreement disclosed to investors in February is now live inside ChatGPT, and the inputs it reads are free for any owner to control.

When a homeowner asks ChatGPT who should look at a leaking water heater, the answer used to be assembled from whatever the model could find on the open web. As of this summer, it can come straight from Yelp. The agreement behind this is older than the headlines: Yelp told investors on February 12 that it had recently signed with OpenAI. On July 23, the details came out, and they put Yelp's reviews, ratings, photos, and business information inside ChatGPT's local recommendations. Less than three weeks after that, Yelp turned on restaurant reservations inside the chat itself.

If you run a local business, this is worth ten minutes of your attention, because the inputs are things you control, and the work is free.

What the deal actually says

The core of the agreement is a content license. Yelp provides OpenAI with real-time local data: reviews, ratings, photos, and business information. When ChatGPT recommends a restaurant, a plumber, or a salon, it can now surface that Yelp content, with Yelp branding and links back to the business's Yelp page. OpenAI controls how it is presented.

Two details from the July 23 reporting deserve more attention than they got.

First, the deal is not exclusive. Some of the early commentary called it an exclusive partnership, and that is wrong. The agreement does not stop Yelp from licensing the same data to other AI platforms, and Yelp has said it sees value in distributing its content beyond its own properties. Translation: what you build on Yelp may travel further than ChatGPT.

Second, Yelp's Request a Quote feature is coming to ChatGPT. That means a person asking for a roofer will eventually be able to contact providers, request consultations, and schedule appointments without leaving the conversation. For service businesses, that turns ChatGPT from a research tool into a lead source.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Two weeks later, it went further

On August 10, Yelp announced the next stage: Yelp Reservations and Waitlist are now live inside ChatGPT. A diner can book a table or join a waitlist at thousands of restaurants across the U.S. and Canada, then manage the booking through Yelp afterward, all without leaving the chat.

Read the pace, because the pace is the story. The agreement was signed by February, when Yelp disclosed it to investors in its 2025 results. The integration details broke on July 23. Reservations went live eighteen days after that, and quoting for service businesses is on the roadmap. Deals sometimes sit in a drawer for a year. This one is shipping features in public, weeks apart.

Why OpenAI wanted this

Local search has been one of ChatGPT's weak spots. It could reason beautifully about how to fix a faucet, then stumble on the simple question of who nearby should fix it, because it lacked a licensed, structured, current source of local business data.

Trust is the other half. Morning Consult research cited in Yelp's August announcement found that 65% of Americans have used AI search, but only 15% trust it a lot, and 72% believe AI platforms should identify their information sources. A recommendation backed by named, linked Yelp reviews answers that objection in a way a bare AI answer cannot.

If Yelp burned you before

Plenty of owners have a complicated history with Yelp. The sales calls. The ad spend that was hard to trace. The reviews that vanished into the filter. Those frustrations are real, and nothing here asks you to forget them.

They also do not change where ChatGPT now gets its local data. You do not have to spend a dollar on Yelp advertising to benefit from this. The parts that feed an AI recommendation, an accurate profile, described photos, and a genuine review history, are all free to maintain. Start there and decide about paid features later, on evidence.

Your Yelp profile just became AI infrastructure. The durable asset is an accurate, detailed, honestly reviewed public record of your business, everywhere an AI engine might look.

What to do this week

  1. Claim and complete your Yelp profile. Business name, address, phone, hours, service area, and the About section, filled in fully and matching your Google Business Profile. A full profile gives an AI engine something to work with; a thin one leaves it guessing.
  2. Upload real photos and describe them. Finished jobs, before-and-after shots for service work, your team, your space. Then write captions that say what the work was. A photo captioned sewer line replacement, day two teaches ChatGPT what you do. An unlabeled photo teaches it nothing.
  3. Know Yelp's review rules before you act. Yelp's official policy says not to ask anyone for reviews, customers, friends, family, or mailing lists, and its software works to filter reviews that look requested. So skip the QR-code-for-reviews tactic you use on Google. On Yelp, the policy-safe path is delivering an experience worth writing about, and responding to every review you already have.
  4. Get ready for Request a Quote. If you are a service business, make sure your categories and service list are accurate and your messaging is turned on, so that when quoting arrives inside ChatGPT, the request reaches you and not a competitor.
  5. Keep your Google discipline. Nothing about this deal shrinks the value of your Google Business Profile. Google's AI features draw on Google's data, and ChatGPT now draws on Yelp's. Two surfaces, one habit: keep both current, the same way, on the same schedule.

The habit that carries this

Step back from the news for a second. Your Yelp profile just became AI infrastructure, and because the deal is non-exclusive, the same could happen with other platforms holding your business data. The durable asset is an accurate, detailed, honestly reviewed public record of your business, everywhere an AI engine might look.

That is a practice, and it is learnable. In the 7 Levels of AI Proficiency, this is the difference between hearing AI news and knowing which ten-minute action it should trigger in your business. The owners who build that reflex will keep showing up in answers, whichever platform signs the next deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to advertise on Yelp to show up in ChatGPT?

No. The licensed data is Yelp's business information, photos, ratings, and reviews. All of it can be built on a free, claimed profile. Paid features are a separate decision.

Is the Yelp deal exclusive to ChatGPT?

No. The agreement does not prevent Yelp from licensing its data to other AI companies, so the profile work you do can carry to other AI platforms that sign similar deals.

I run a restaurant. What is live right now?

As of August 10, ChatGPT users can book through Yelp Reservations or join a Waitlist at thousands of U.S. and Canada restaurants without leaving the chat, and manage the booking through Yelp afterward.

I run a service business. What should I do before Request a Quote arrives?

Complete your profile, verify your categories and service list, turn on messaging, and respond to existing reviews. When quoting goes live inside ChatGPT, the businesses with complete, current profiles are the ones a request can actually reach.
