Canva Code 2.0: Build a Website Free From a Sentence

Canva put an AI website builder on its free plan. Here is what a small-business owner can actually do with it, and where the real skill sits.

In July 2026, Canva launched Canva Code 2.0. You type a plain sentence, and it builds an interactive website, app, or experience. Then you edit the result the way you edit a Canva design, by clicking and dragging.

The tool itself is not the news. Plenty of AI can write code from a prompt now. The news is who gets it.

Canva says Code 2.0 is available on every plan the company sells. Free, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education. If you have a free Canva login, you have an AI site builder. No upgrade, no credit card on file.

That is a real change for anyone who has ever thought "I can't build that myself."

What is Canva Code 2.0?

Canva Code 2.0 turns a written prompt into a working site or app. You describe what you want. The tool generates it. You then customize it visually, without touching code.

A few things come with it, per Canva's announcement:

  • Drag-and-drop editing of anything the AI generates. Move it, resize it, recolor it.
  • Brand customization, so the output can carry your colors, fonts, and logo.
  • Access to Canva's asset library to swap in photos and graphics. Canva reports the library holds more than 120 million assets.
  • More than 50 templates to start from instead of a blank prompt.
  • HTML import, which lets you bring in work built somewhere else, including output from a different AI assistant, and edit it inside Canva as a design.

That last one is quietly useful. If you already generated a rough site in another tool and it looks like a rough site, you can pull it into Canva and make it look like yours.

What does "available to everyone" actually mean?

This is where Canva made a deliberate choice.

Most of the well-known "vibe coding" tools keep their strongest features behind a paid plan. Canva names three competitors in this space: Lovable, Bolt, and Replit. All three reserve their most capable work for subscribers.

Canva did the opposite. It bundled the builder into a plan that costs nothing.

Cameron Adams, Canva's co-founder and chief product officer, put it plainly: "Today, Canva Code 2.0 is available to everyone on Canva, free users included."

The reach behind that sentence is large. Canva reports more than 265 million monthly active users. That is the audience this now sits in front of.

One honest caveat. The reviewed announcement does not spell out whether the free tier carries usage caps, a watermark, or publishing limits. It also does not confirm whether a free user gets every template and the HTML import, or a smaller set. So "free" is real, but treat "unlimited free" as an open question until you test your own account and read the fine print. Do not build a client's live storefront on an assumption about the free plan.

Why does free-for-everyone change the math for a small business?

If you run a small business, you have felt this problem. You need a web page for a promotion, a simple booking site, a one-pager for a new service. The quote from a developer is more than the promotion will earn. So the page never gets built, and you keep sending people to a link in your bio.

An AI builder on a free plan changes that arithmetic. The cost of trying drops to your time and one sentence.

Canva shares a few speed numbers, and they are Canva's own figures, not an outside audit. The company reports Code 2.0 cuts code generation time by 75% compared to the previous version. It reports the median time from a first prompt to a published site is 30% faster. It does not disclose the baseline it measured against, so read those as directional, not precise.

The count that tells you people are using it: Canva says 6 million sites have been created since Canva Code first launched.

For a solo founder or an owner wearing every hat, the value is that a real page can exist by end of day, for free, without hiring anyone.

What is the real skill now?

Adams said one more thing, and owners should read it twice. "When everyone has access to the same AI, the thing that sets you apart is whether what you make actually looks like you."

Read that again, because it is the whole point.

When the code is free and instant, "can you build it" stops being the question. Everyone can build it. The question becomes whether the thing you built reflects your brand, your judgment, and your customer. That is a matter of taste and direction.

The tool is now cheap and common. Your direction is the part that is not.

This is exactly the climb we teach in The 7 Levels of AI Proficiency. The early levels are about getting a tool to do the thing at all. The higher levels are about judgment: knowing what "good" looks like, steering the output, catching what the AI got wrong, and shaping it into something only you would have made.

A free builder hands everyone the same starting block. Canva even bet its product strategy on this idea. Its read of the "vibe coding" space, a category the company notes barely existed 18 months ago yet has already produced billion-dollar startups, is that generating working code was never the hard part. Making the output look good was. So Canva competed on the thing it is known for, which is design.

Same lesson for you. The tool is now cheap and common. Your direction is the part that is not.

What should you try this week?

You do not need a plan for this. You need one small rep.

  1. Open a free Canva account, or log in to the one you have.
  2. Find Canva Code and type one honest sentence about a page you actually need. A booking page for your service. A simple menu. A signup for your next event.
  3. Look at what it builds. Then change three things so it looks like you: your colors, your logo, your words.
  4. Before you publish anything real, check your account for free-plan limits, watermarks, or caps. Confirm what you are allowed to ship.

That is a first rep, not a launch. The goal is to feel how short the distance now is between an idea and a working page.

If the result is rough, that is fine. Rough is where the actual skill starts. The AI gives you a draft. You give it judgment. Over time, that judgment is what people will pay you for, long after the free tool becomes ordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Canva Code 2.0 really free?

Canva says it is available on the free plan, alongside Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education. What the reviewed announcement does not confirm is whether the free tier has caps, watermarks, or publishing limits, so verify inside your own account before you rely on it for a live business page.

What can I build with it?

Per Canva, you can build interactive websites, apps, and experiences from a plain-language prompt, then edit the result visually. You can also import HTML from work built elsewhere and edit it as a Canva design.

How is this different from Lovable, Bolt, or Replit?

Canva names those three and says they keep their most capable features behind paid plans. Canva's difference is putting its builder on a free tier that already has, by Canva's count, more than 265 million monthly users.

Which AI model powers it?

The reviewed announcement does not say. Treat the underlying model as unconfirmed.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You describe what you want in words, and you edit the output by clicking and dragging. The skill that separates good results from generic ones is judgment about your own brand and customer, not code.
